Before going on mat leave, I knew I wanted to start a mom blog. Something fun to during my time off work. Now I know it sounded very ambitious at the time, since I was warned that my main priority was survival. Taking care of a baby is a lot of work and probably one of the most challenging tasks I’ve taken on to date. Combine that with a lack of sleep – there are some days I’m just trying to make it until the next nap.
Today I just want to share some tips on how to make time for something you want to do while caring for your little one.
Capitalize on nap time
My kiddo naps twice a day for approximately 1h40ms. The moment I put him to bed, I start moving fast.
If you’re able to nap. I would prioritize napping. But if you’re unfortunate like me, you can use that time to do something else. Cook a meal, clean, start a blog, find a new hobby.
When you’re thinking of a new project to undertake, there might be a number of things you wanted to do but never got the time to. I think if you use your time wisely, you can surprisingly get a lot accomplished. Especially if you find something you’re passionate about.
Just get started
I think the problem with most people, is that they let their fears in in the way of starting something new. Whether it’s a blog, new business, new hobby. My advice? Just jump in, test & learn.
Starting Small
If you’re interested in blogging, there are a number of free platforms such as WordPress or Squarespace. You don’t even have to invest in a domain. Just try it out, see if you like it.
If you’re looking to get into a craft, you don’t have to make a heavy financial investment. Stores like Dollarama does such a good job with keeping up with trends that you can purchase a few items and try it out. Something as simple as a cheap sampler pack of yarn could allow you to try multiple crafts such as weaving, crocheting, knitting – you name it.
Final words: I think mat leave is a great time to re-find yourself. No one really tells you that after you have a baby that you’ll be a different person. There are some moms who decide to make the choice and stay home with their kids – something like a side business can help make that happen.
